Horse Racing’s Advent Calendar–December 1

The countdown to Christmas is underway, and what better way to track the anticipation of the season than with an Advent Calendar. But as exciting as a ’1 x ’1 inch square chocolate snowflake may be, we at Thorobros wanted to put a racing spin on what’s behind the daily doors.   So welcome to our (very) unofficial Advent Racing Calendar! Over the next 24 days we will feature a replay from a horse with a connection (often very remote) to the Holidays . We hope you enjoy and wish everyone a happy holiday season!

Consistent with origins of the advent calendar, we wanted to start our countdown with the Nativity theme. While we drew a blank on horses named after a manger, racing does have a recent legend that fits the story—a Wise Man Dan. Although he didn’t bear gold, frankincense or myrrh, Dan gifted racing fans with victory after victory during an over three-year stretch where he was the star of the sport. In 2012 and 2013 Dan twice won the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the Woodbine Mile, the Fourstardave and Horse of the Year honors. Dan had many memorable victories in his career, but none was more dramatic than his heroic comeback win in the 2014 Bernard Baruch over a very game Optimizer (30-1), shown below.
