40 Days: A Salute to Saratoga–Fourstardave

From Mary Lou to Tom; Jim Dandy to Fourstardave; Siro’s to backyard tailgating; and morning workouts to give aways; Saratoga has a cast of heroes, customs, and institutions which make it, in our opinion, the most unique sporting venue on Earth. Over the next 40 Days, we will profile 40 of these legends and traditions, adding our own memories and experiences from 30 plus years of summering at the Spa. It’s our Salute to Saratoga. We hope you enjoy following along.

On August 28, 1987, hall of famer Randy Romero piloted a 2-1 second choice juvenile to win what appeared to be an otherwise benign edition of Saratoga’s Empire Stakes–a six furlong event for two year old New York Breds.  Fast forward seven Saratoga meetings later, and that otherwise unremarkable 1987 state bred stakes held a much larger legacy. It marked the birth of a Sultan.

Fourstardave, The Sultan of Saratoga, won at least one race at the Spa for eight consecutive years spanning from 1987 thru 1994.  In doing so, he became a local legend.  Fourstardave retired after making 99 starts with a record of 21-18-16 and earnings of $1,636,560.   He also owns a mellon turf course record at Saratoga, traveling a mile and sixteenth in 1:38 4/5.

In 1995, following his retirement, Fourstardave was given an edible key to the city of Saratoga and a street,  “Fourstardave Way” was named in his honor.  On a personal note, two young Thorobros attended the 1995 street naming outside Siros and have signed goggles which Angel Cordero wore that day as he rode ‘Dave over from the barn area.

In 1996, the Darly’s Joy Stakes–a race Fourstardave won twice–was renamed the in the Sultan’s honor. Besides its namesake, only one other horse has won the race multiple times–Wise Dan. Other winners include Breeders’ Cup mile champs Lure, Da Hoss, and Steinlen.

Today’s clip features Tom Durkin, in rare cheerleader mode, rooting home the “Old Boy” as he dominates an allowance field for his final Saratoga victory in 1994.   Enjoy and best of luck to everone wagering on today’s Fourstardave.

40 Days: A Salute to Saratoga–Thunder Rumble

Longshot winners and New York-breds always receive royal treatment at Saratoga. And no horse better merged these two criteria, along with a love for the Spa, than the horse who ended a 125 year drought for New York-breds in the Travers–Thunder Rumble.

Whitney Day Bro Picks and Analysis–Races 7 through 10

Happy Whitney Day everyone! A classic Saratoga race with a who’s who list of alumni and racing memories. If history repeats itself, there’s a great chance—with a apologies to a certain Triple Crown winner—that the Breeder’s Cup Classic champ will be running in the 9th Race at Saratoga today.

We had a successful Whitney Day 2014 thanks solely to Moreno’s front running efforts. We’re hoping to repeat our success and expand it to the day’s other stakes races. It won’t be easy though—these races are all very competitive. We’re up for the challenge, however, and below are our thoughts on this year’s Whitney as well as the other stakes in races 7 through 10.

40 Days: A Salute to Saratoga–Guillot’s Gumbo

From Mary Lou to Tom; Jim Dandy to Fourstardave; Siro’s to backyard tailgating; and morning workouts to give aways; Saratoga has a cast of heroes, customs, and institutions which make it, in our opinion, the most unique sporting venue on Earth. Over the next 40 Days, we will profile 40 of these legends and traditions, adding our own memories and experiences from 30 plus years of summering at the Spa. It’s our Salute to Saratoga. We hope you enjoy following along.

With over 150 years of racing under its weathered belt, it’s no surprise that Saratoga Race Course is cloaked with established traditions. But at Saratoga, traditions are contagious and each year new traditions form which, by virtue of their occurrence at the Spa, inherit a lore and legacy unearned by their infancy. Potential new traditions lurk are around every corner at Saratoga, even in the most unexpected places.

And so was the case five years ago. On the Sunday morning after Travers, I admit I couldn’t wait to get out of Saratoga and head back to the friendly confines of my apartment in Philadelphia. It marked day five of my friend’s bachelor party, and the thought of returning to the races for a full day, to only then turn around and drive five hours back to Philadelphia was disheartening. My tank was on empty. I was waiving the white flag. But my navigator and future Thorobro was adamant that we stayed for day’s races—“Rachel is running. We have to stay.” So I dusted off the cobwebs, drank about 22 hours-worth of 5 hour energy and boarded the hearse pointed towards Union Avenue. With the third Thorobro at the helm, we entered the track from the Nelson Avenue entrance, but then made an unexpected B line to the barn area. “Where the hell are we going?” I asked. “Got a little surprise” was the response. We got out of the car and walked towards the barn area. I didn’t know it at the time, but this was the start of my favorite new era Saratoga tradition.

Day 5:  Angel Cordero–The King of Saratoga

In the 1984 Whitney, 4/5 favorite Slew O’ Gold, ridden by Angel Cordero, and talented three year old Track Barron, ridden by Jean Cruguet, headlined a three horse field (after two horses scratched). As the gate opened, Cordero rushed Slew O’ Gold to the lead where he was clear by a few lengths over Track Barron in second. As the pair entered the backstretch (well ahead of the third horse—Thumbsucker), Cordero pulled Slew O’ Gold off the rail, inviting Track Barron to rush up beside him.  Cruguet accepted the invitation and the pair dueled through a quick opening half mile in 46 and change. As they rounded the far turn, the two horses were still inseparable. Cruguet lowered himself in the reigns and began driving Track Barron. Everyone braced for an apparent epic stretch drive. But not Angel Cordero. Instead of setting down Slew O’ Gold for the stretch drive or focusing on the horse directly to his inside, Cordero curiously rose in the irons and looked behind him—for Thumbsucker, who was at least a dozen lengths behind. Cordero knew what Cruguet and everyone watching did not yet understand. The King of Saratoga was about to have yet another Spa City coronation.

40 Days: A Salute To Saratoga–Julie Krone

She never won a Saratoga riding title. She never had her picture taken in the winner’s circle for the Travers. Yet, in the early to mid-1990’s there was no brighter and bigger star in the Saratoga jockey colony—which included Hall of Famers such as Bailey, Antley, Romero, Smith and Velasquez—than Julie Krone. Standing at 4 feet 10 inches, and barely cracking triple digits in pounds, Krone could not be overlooked.

Horse Racing Has Its Triple Crown Winner! Now What?

Post Script: We wrote this piece last year in anticipation of California Chrome’s Triple Crown bid. Of Course California Chrome fell short of the Triple Crown.  However, here we are, one year later, and thanks to American Pharoah, racing has it’s Triple Crown hero.

What can the sport do to capitalize on this once in every 37 year opportunity?  While many of our thoughts from last year were Chrome specific, the general themes still hold true.  The sport will benefit greatly from every additional start Pharoah makes and all tracks should do everything in their power to attract the star.  While the $10,000 cost angle doesn’t apply, Victor’s American Dream story is certainly marketable and should be at the forefront of industry marketing.

And as a start, we love what we’ve seen to date from track marketing.  Santa Anita already announced a poster give away.  Churchill will have American Pharoah make a public appearance during the Stephen Foster card, and NBC Sports will broadcast it.  Let’s keep this momentum going.

Let us know  what thoughts you may have on how the sport can capitalize on American Pharoah’s accomplishment.

Lessons from 37 Years of History: Stay Focused

Since Affirmed beat Alydar yet again to take the Triple Crown in 1978, 13 horses have come to Belmont with a chance to join the most exclusive club in Thoroughbred Racing.  Now its American Pharoah’s turn.  In the words of George Santayana, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”  American Pharoah has a lot of take-aways from the last 13 failed Triple Crown attempts.  It might be June, but for American Pharoah, school is in session.

It’s a simple, yet easier said than done, directive–stay focused.  If American Pharoah wants to erase 37 years of shortcomings, he and his connections cannot lose focus today, tomorrow, and especially Saturday.
